Local charity with big plans to help hundreds of families in need seeks community support
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Hundreds of cars line the street at 22nd Street South in St. Petersburg. They’re waiting for Positive Impact Ministries' Saturday food distribution. “Look at this. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — A non-profit is working to ensure everybody who needs fresh and healthy food in St. Petersburg has access to it.
According to the United States Department of Agriculture, 23.5 million Americans, or about one out of every 12 people, live in a food desert. One of those food deserts is in South St. Petersburg where Positive Impact hosts a free grocery distribution event every Saturday at Tangerine Plaza. Watch Now.
Local nonprofit presenting plans to build a free grocery store at Tangerine Plaza in South St. Pete. Positive Impact has plans to build a neighborhood market on the lot that will mimic a grocery store where people can get fresh food for free. "With roomy aisles and bright lighting, it will welcome the families in and will not look any different from any other grocery store. St. Pete to discuss Tangerine Plaza's future, non-profit offers to buy space March 26, 2024
The non-profit is offering to buy Tangerine Plaza from the city, to create a free neighborhood market and a culinary arts center for on-the-job training, a family café and a banquet hall.
"Our neighbors can shop with dignity," said Rae. "They can come in, they can select the foods that they want, as well as the foods that they need to meet their personal dietary needs." Click the link to watch news story.
Positive Impact Ministries hands out fresh food at Tangerine Plaza every Saturday, and will soon submit a proposal to acquire the much-maligned city-owned site. Tangerine Plaza still bustles every Saturday morning as cars snake around its parking lot to receive groceries from Positive Impact Ministries (PIM). March 9, 2024: Five ways you can make a positive impact in St. Pete. In partnership with Publix, Sam’s Club, Aldi and The Fresh Market, Positive Impact Ministries distributes free groceries every Saturday at Tangerine Plaza in St. Petersburg. Volunteers are needed to help sort food, pack boxes of groceries and lift them into cars for recipient families. ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (WFLA) — The smell of cheese and pepperoni wafted through the air at the Tangerine Plaza in St. Petersburg on Sunday, as nearly 300 cars full of hungry families and about 100 walk-ups lined up for a free pizza giveaway.
“You just drive up and we hand you a pizza and you drive away so there are no questions asked,” said Karen Rae. “Everyone is welcome.” Read More.
Positive Impact Worldwide gave away over 600 free pies to families in need in St. Petersburg, Florida. The organization partnered with the city's police department and Domino's Pizza to put together the drive.
